allen who replaced petreaus as the top american commander in afghanistan and last night the fbi searched the north carolina home of paula broadwell with whom petreaus had an affair. tara mergener has the latest. >> reporter: ordering a pentagon investigation of one of the nation's highest profile u.s. military officials. general john allen, the man who succeeded david petreaus as head of the international forces in afghanistan is linked to the investigation involving his predecessor. secretary of defense leon panetta says the fbi has turned the case over to department of defense investigators. the senior u.s. defense official says the inquiry centers around potentially inappropriate e-mails with jill kelley, the florida woman who sparked an investigation that led to petreaus' resignation as head of the cia. >> if you know my sister like i said, she is a dedicated mother and wife. >> reporter: kelley went to the fbi when she received threatening e-mails from an anonymous source. those were allegedly linked to paula broadwell. broadwell was having an affair with petreaus and reportedly bel

of one. petraeus indiscretions came to the attention of the fbi. they were conducting an investigation into what looked like suspicious emails to a person at the cia and a person at the national intelligence agency. those emails involved paula broadwell the author of a petraeus biography called "all in." she spent time in afghanistan while petraeus was commander there, gathering material for her book. she told jon stewart on the "daily show" her research included working out with the fay spousely fit four tar general. >> when i was in kabul we would do a lot of interviews on run. for him it was a good distraction from the war. of course he's a bit concerned as someone in his position would be about legacy. >> reporter: president obama acknowledged the military side of the petraeus legacy saying in a statement by any measure he was one of the outstanding general officers of his generation. as head of the cia petraeus violated no law by having an affair. although he conceded a moral failing, saying he showed extremely poor judgment both as a husband and a leade

information on that story. bob, good morning. >> good morning, norah and charlie. fbi officials have told us their investigation into this whole scandal which brought down david petraeus so far has not turned up any threat or damage to national security. but since the affair with paula broadwell occurred while petraeus was the director of the central intelligence agency, the cia's inspector general now has begun his own investigation. sources say the cia is looking into the general conduct of petraeus over the 14 months he headed the agency. officials say the probe is exploratory and doesn't presuppose any particular outcome. the inspector general wants to make sure petraeus didn't misuse any agency assets in the process of carrying on his affair with broadwell. for the first time thursday, attorney general eric holder defended the justice department's handling of the fbi summer-long investigation of the broadwell/petraeus matter. holder was asked specifically about the fbi's decision to delay notifying the white house until after the election. >> we felt very secure in the knowledge that a
